DELETING FILES... We have been taught to think that when "deleting" files and then Emptying the Recycle Bin that the selected files are now really gone. This is not true. What happens is that the Windows disk manager only "deletes" it's known reference to the name and where a file is being stored on the hard drive. The file/s are actually still there and can be very easily recovered with simple software tools. 

Over time Windows may or may not write other files to the same disk space on the hard drive where the "deleted" files were originally placed. This means that usually parts or all of the file/s, would not normally be able to be read. However, more advanced software technology can dig below the surface data level and read the information originally stored on the hard drive underneath. The most advanced type of data recovery software is called "forensic software", yet there is also hardware equipment that is even more powerful.

FORMATTING HARD DRIVES... Many people think that formatting a hard drive will permanently erase all the data on the drive. This also is not true. Formatting is only a very low level hard drive cleaning function. Again simple software tools can read below the "formatted" level and read/recover enormous amounts of data from a used hard drive. Even formatting a hard drive several times will make very little difference.

What is needed is a "secure erasing" tool to thoroughly clean a hard drive to a point where the data is no longer recoverable. This is a complex process involving the overwriting of existing data several times until it can no longer be read. 

INTERNET BROWSING RECORDS...Windows keeps many different records about internet activity with the big three being Temporary Internet Files [Cache], Cookies and History. Cookies can be viewed and/or "deleted" from the Cookies folder in Windows. Cache and History can be "cleared/deleted" from Internet Explorer Options menu. But just like deleting other files, this also is not actually true. 

Cache is controlled via Windows in the Content.IE5 folder. This is a complex array of "hidden & locked" folders that cannot be deleted as such. The files you see in these folders aren't in fact actually there but are merely "representations" of the hidden files/data. Just deleting or even erasing these files does not destroy the data and many other records of these files in Windows or on the hard drive.

With Cookies and History, this data is actually stored in master *.dat files in those folders. Deleting the stored files does not delete the data in the DAT files. These DAT files are also "locked" by Windows and cannot be deleted or securely erased easily.

Yet there is a wealth of other recorded information that is being stored in numerous hidden folders and DAT files about your internet browsing and general computer activity. Most of this is done to provide user benefits such as recent files, internet addresses, email addresses and search box lists. At the end of the day however it all adds up to compelling recorded evidence.

Using the standard Windows clearing options for the "big three" only works to delete the openly accessible files, but you must remember to manually do these steps. When doing this however, the "real data" still remains in DAT files, in Windows and on your hard drive.

Another option is to set up "batch files" that will delete the files, locked folders and DAT files during the start up process. This is a better method and can be automated as well, yet it still does not securely erase that data from the hard drive. 

A third option is to use the free or commercial "washer/eraser/cleaner" programs that are available now. Some "securely erase" the data files but most just delete them. The main problem with these programs is that they do not securely erase ALL the other hidden records that are made by Windows as you use your computer. [eg. see Windows Registry below] 

So the bottom line is, that all these options only provide a very "low level" of security and privacy, and then only against a non-computer savvy snoop. Any teenage hacker, local PC repairman or other motivated person [or jealous wife] could easily dig into your system and discover a wealth of evidence about your internet habits and personal tastes. Is it worth the risk against the price of a program like Evidence Eliminator? 

Remember that all the software tools are readily available on the internet, that would enable a relatively inexperienced person to delve into your computer records. In fact, it is easily done by a competent hacker/cracker when you are online, and believe me they do this all the time if you are not fully protected. Those that use their work computers to play around on the internet in their down time are just asking to get busted. It happens all the time.

EMAIL & NEWSGROUPS DATA... In this example we'll stay with the MS Windows Outlook Express software, though all programs work in similar ways. Windows creates unique storage folders for keeping special *.dbx, *.dat and other data files. These store your personal emails and messages downloaded from newsgroups. Attachments from emails and messages are usually copied into the Temporary Internet Files folders as well, in order to view them.

It's a very complex process and again the usual story applies... just deleting a file or folder does not necessarily remove all copies and records of that file. The folders system in Outlook Express is as complicated as the Content.IE5 folders. Just deleting an email doesn't delete it from the folder DAT file in which it is actually stored. Over time these storage folders grow quite large and eventually affect your system performance. 

And again, for those who know how to "delete" their newsgroup data files or even if you securely erase them with another software tool, ALL the other records about that newsgroup and the downloaded messages and attachments [pics] from it are still spread throughout other hidden windows areas. The evidence is still there on your computer and can be recovered relatively easily.

WINDOWS SWAP FILE...This is a huge Windows "memory" file of around 200mb that is used to store recently used data and maintain program ready response times. It is automatically controlled by Windows but can become too large or corrupted which can cause all sorts of problems. Besides this, the swap file is like an instant photo of everything that has been done on your computer in months gone by. 

This file is "locked" by Windows and cannot be easily "deleted" similar to the DAT files. Most of the cheaper "washer/eraser/cleaner" programs are able to clean and replace this file. Regularly cleaning this file and the many others we have already discussed helps to speed up your computer and keep it running smoothly.

WINDOWS REGISTRY... Windows runs with literally hundreds of secret folders and data files that operate in conjunction with the Registry to maintain all the detailed history records, a few of which we have discussed above. 

This is a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it provides convenient shortcuts, like remembering web addresses, but also a curse because it means your privacy is at severe risk unless you do something about it...

The Registry is like the master controller of the entire computer system you use. Nothing happens without the Registry. Maybe you've seen information about how worm viruses and trojan to their thing? It always involves creating many new Registry inputs and installing various copies of its files throughout the Windows Operating system. 

Well that's how practically everything happens no matter what you are using. Log files, entry files, copies of records of copies of files and so on. So lets say you accidentally downloaded and viewed an "illegal" file. Deleting it won't protect you. Neither will other secure erasing tools protect you because there is evidence about that file already recorded elsewhere in Windows. Yes other tools might be able to "securely erase" the newsgroup folder or the cache but they don't get deep down into Windows or the Registry in particular.

If the Registry or either the system.dat & the user.dat files [which are two key components of the registry] are totally erased, then your computer won't work anymore and will need to be fully reinstalled from scratch.
